Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked gambling on different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus even more on poker.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge each other. He had access into a number of the foremost minds in chess. Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
