Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.
The real improvement in his abilities began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access several of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his cunning thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. He relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
